On an average day at The Ken, we get close to 100-150 emails from our subscribers.

With every passing month, it takes us longer and longer to read and reply to subscriber emails. Internally, we follow a round-robin system. Monday is Sneha’s day. Tuesday it’s Sameer. Sometimes Rohin jumps in as well. Just before the pandemic hit, we started getting phone calls on our unlisted office landline. Feedback. Doubts. Questions.

Despite this, we have no plans of hiring anyone dedicated for customer support. For a simple reason—our subscribers are in this with us. They tell us what stories they’d like to read. Or about what’s happening inside a company. Or what products they’d like us to build.

That’s how we knew how and when to launch multi-year and couple subscription plans. And why we created a beta group for our mobile app users. And how we understood why our newsletters were valuable and worth paying for. The Ken’s subscribers told us to jump, and we leapt.

Today, we are leaping a little further, because Anushka joins us as the first member of the New Product Initiatives team.

Anushka is no stranger to The Ken. Back in 2018, she joined us as our first intern, when we were considerably smaller and worked at the intersection of product and editorial. Now she joins us full-time to own and build out a range of editorial products—some that subscribers have been asking for, and some they haven’t that we hope will surprise and delight them.

There are stories of Anushka that everyone in The Ken has heard about. Like how she got a remark in her diary in the 2nd grade for talking too much. Scarred by the experience, she says, she decided to start her own podcast. Over the next few months, if you are a subscriber, you’ll find that her talents extend to drawing comics, data visualisations and audio storytelling.

Anushka is a graduate in Communication and Media Studies from the Manipal Academy of Higher Education. She also spent a semester in the Netherlands studying Creative Business at the HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht.

Praveen has over 9 years of experience in product management. Prior to The Ken, he was the Director of Product at InMobi. He holds an MBA from IIM, Bengaluru and an engineering degree in Electronics & Communications from NIT, Tiruchirappalli.
