The Ken is a pan-Asian, digital publication headquartered out of Bengaluru, India. Founded in October 2016 by a team of experienced journalists and entrepreneurs, The Ken pioneered subscribers-only online business journalism.
In India and Southeast Asia, we offer our subscribers one original, deeply reported, analytical and well-narrated story every day.
Our subscriber community comprises innovative and successful entrepreneurs and senior executives; venture investors; policy makers; college students; and some of the best known and most innovative companies. We are also funded by a set of stellar investors, including Omidyar Network.
In India, we are headquartered in Bengaluru and have offices in Delhi and Mumbai. In Southeast Asia, our full-time writers report from Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia.
While The Ken produces deeply reported and original business journalism each day, we go to great lengths to make it accessible to all kinds of readers and subscribers. Which is why narrative-driven, long-form stories are our preferred medium.
This is where a strong desk comes in.
Desk editors work with our journalists to help shape powerful ideas into compelling and lucid prose that is both effortless and rewarding to read.
Ensuring this is an end-to-end process. Along the way, the desk serves as an eye in the sky, of sorts. Constantly monitoring the progress of writers, asking questions, providing feedback on content, ensuring they follow intelligent story structure, adhere to their original pitches, and meet deadlines. This may happen over multiple drafts. Ultimately, the desk will take the final draft and elevate it to The Ken’s standards of reporting and storytelling—this includes headlining, straps, summaries, lead image selection, etc., in addition to copyediting and fact-checking and rewriting. However, the edit process is only one part of the desk’s responsibilities. The desk is also responsible for managing reporters’ story pipelines, ensuring each reporter has a story to work on, and the organisation has visibility of the story calendar going forward.
The desk is also tasked with ensuring that the organisation’s appearance to readers is as close to perfect as possible. No typos. No factual errors. No amateur arguments. No ethical conflicts.
At The Ken the desk, barring minor differences in responsibilities, functions as a single unit, striving to make each story we put out an impeccable and convincing “must read”.
A minimum of 5 years of experience preferably in business or tech news. A strong understanding of the business & startup ecosystem India and/or SE Asia; and experience in writing or editing longform are bonuses.
One of our tenets is to offer the most competitive salaries and meaningful benefits we can to our colleagues. While we do keep an eye on what our peers or larger media incumbents pay, we are neither limited or guided by them. What this means is that promising candidates can almost always assume they will be compensated well.
We typically take 7-10 working days to review each application. Once reviewed, we may reach out to you for further steps. In the meantime, we recommend that you read about our culture and get to know us better.
