The Ken was founded in October 2016 as an attempt to re-imagine business journalism. Not for everyone, but for the not insignificant subset of smart and curious subscribers who valued their own time and intelligence above all else. Today, 5 years later, we have over 300,000 such subscribers in India, Southeast Asia, and the rest of the world, over a tenth of who are paying ones.

Our diverse global subscriber community comprises innovative and successful entrepreneurs and senior executives, venture investors, knowledge professionals, policy makers, students, top-ranked B-schools and some of the most innovative and well-known business and tech companies.

We’ve managed to achieve this because we invested early on in three key areas – journalism, product, and engineering. Our website and mobile apps have been built and are managed in-house by our team of talented, skilled and amazing developers.

The Ken’s mobile apps, which are available exclusively for paying subscribers, are incredibly special because they are a core part of the subscriber experience. And they are deeply, passionately loved by our subscribers. Our mobile apps are beautiful and have advanced immersive experiences like visual stories, audio and text.

Over the last few years, The Ken’s mobile apps have skyrocketed towards becoming one of the best in India.

  • Rated a perfect 5.0 on Google Play Store India (850+ reviews, 10,000+ downloads).
  • Rated 4.7+ on Apple App Store (850+ reviews, 10,000+ downloads)

Our app was also featured on Apple’s App Store’s curated list of best gift subscriptions in October 2021, alongside apps by global giants such as the New York Times, Washington Post, The Economist and Blinkist.

The Ken’s mobile apps have been developed on React Native.

About The Role

The React Native App Developer will own and drive app development—including decisions about tools, technologies, and processes —for The Ken. This is an incredible opportunity for anyone interested in being a part of a high-performing, fast team with a massive learning curve. Our team moves fast and develops world-class products by pushing the boundaries of React Native app development. If hired, you will be part of The Ken’s in-house Product & Engineering team.

From a day-to-day standpoint, you’ll have the following responsibilities:

  • Build beautiful, highly usable, and intuitive product flows and interfaces using React Native.
  • Interface with the product, engineering, and design team. Develop, and integrate core functionalities on the website and the app through APIs.
  • Build new features and support updates on our mobile apps.
  • Work in a fast-paced, agile team to produce performant, high quality products that our subscribers will love using
  • Write modular, unit-testable code with high test coverage and following industry best-practices

Our goal is to take the mobile app to the next level. Our upcoming roadmap is quite challenging, and you will be building features and experiences not seen anywhere in Asia.

You’re also guaranteed to work with the smartest, most diverse, passionate, and curious people in journalism, media, strategy, and products. There will not be a day you will not learn or be challenged.

Experience

2+ years of React Native experience with some hands-on experience with app development and launches especially deployment with the App Store and Play Store.

Compensation

One of our tenets is to offer the most competitive salaries and meaningful benefits we can to our colleagues. While we do keep an eye on what our peers or larger media incumbents pay, we are neither limited or guided by them. What this means is that promising candidates can almost always assume they will be compensated well.

Desired attributes

We love self-driven individuals. We give them autonomy and freedom instead of shackling them with processes. Our team is comprised of people who build things, knock down bugs and research new technologies to deliver value. Day after day. Relentlessly. You’ll be one of them.
