The Ken is a pan-Asian, digital publication headquartered out of Bengaluru, India. Founded in October 2016 by a team of experienced journalists and entrepreneurs, The Ken pioneered subscribers-only online business journalism.
In India and Southeast Asia, we offer our subscribers one original, deeply reported, analytical and well-narrated story every day.
Our subscriber community comprises innovative and successful entrepreneurs and senior executives; venture investors; policy makers; college students; and some of the best known and most innovative companies. We are also funded by a set of stellar investors, including Omidyar Network.
In India, we are headquartered in Bengaluru and have offices in Delhi and Mumbai. In Southeast Asia, our full-time writers report from Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia.
About the role
Since 2016, our daily subscriber-only stories have been introduced each morning through our email newsletter, which uses clear, sharp and insightful writing to help readers know why the story matters.
In 2019 we introduced The Nutgraf, a weekend newsletter that breaks down, rebuilds and explains some of the biggest events and news from India, all in a signature style.
In March 2020 we introduced two more newsletters. The first was Strait Up, a Friday newsletter that recaps the biggest events across Southeast Asia for our premium subscribers. The second was Beyond the First Order, a daily newsletter that covers the far-reaching consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic across India and Southeast Asia.
Our newsletters, though distinct in focus and style, all share a common objective – to go beyond the obvious and help our subscribers make sense of not just what is happening, but also why it is happening, and what might come next.
We are looking for a sharp, curious, well-read and witty writer who can tell compelling stories each day that hold the reader’s attention. Stories that connect the dots and explain the subtext, so readers can truly make sense of the world in which they occur.
The writer will write primarily for our BFO newsletter, but also contribute to other newsletters. In addition to writing stories, we’re also looking for someone who will scan, curate and edit stories on business, tech and economy that lend themselves to interesting stories.
2-3 years of experience, either as a tech, business news reporter, or an analyst or researcher covering the space.
We typically take 7-10 working days to review each application. Once reviewed, we may reach out to you for further steps. In the meantime, we recommend that you read about our culture and get to know us better.
