The entry of Reliance Jio into India’s telecom market has caused tectonic shifts across multiple industries. On one hand Jio is using its parent Reliance’s balance sheet, ambition and lobbying power to claw away market share from leading incumbents Bharti Airtel and Vodafone-Idea. On the other, its strategy of offering cheap, high-speed data has spurred a “data revolution” for hundreds of millions of Indians. Riding on this are all sorts of players, ranging from Chinese apps to YouTube to OTT players.
The reporter will closely track the strategies and moves of leading telecom and media players as they battle each other for market share, subscribers and wallets. Convergence will be a reality in 2019 and the reporter will keep our readers ahead of the curve on how it shapes out.
The most important companies to watch here will be Hotstar, Netflix, Reliance Jio and Vodafone-Idea.
While The Ken does not chase scoops, it does place an emphasis on original insight and impactful breaking news. That will especially be true of this role. The reporter will also work closely with other writers and editors who cover overlapping issues around telecom, media, Internet and startups.
The role reports to the Newsroom Editor, The Ken.
