For more than 20 years, Astro Malaysia Holdings had no competition. From September 1996 to February 2017, it was the sole satellite television operator in Malaysia. This monopoly allowed it to garner a base of about 24 million individuals out of Malaysia’s 32 million population. It claims to serve 5.7 million or 75% of Malaysian households. Astro’s long reign, however, is now in jeopardy.
Astro has built an envious media empire over two decades. Its pay-TV service has 205 international and regional TV channels. It’s the exclusive Malaysian broadcast partner for the Premier League football and other major sporting events.
