Yes, you are right. What you are highlighting in the informal-offline market. Gozo Cabs does this on a small scale. Ibibo had something called Ibibo Ryde which was B2B2C. They were buying Innovas, running and selling seats on Innova. This model is currently not there. If online players were able to effectively create an online seat-select service for carpooling, then they can compete with the offline folks. This solves the reliability problem as well.

Yes, dependability/reliability becomes far more important in outstation travel from a traveler perspective. A user I spoke to highlighted that Savaari has a customer care number that he can call if he ever had any problem or if he was unable to reach the driver's phones. Speaks of the dependability aspect you highlighted.
